비스듬히 자란 버드나무는 서리를 맞아 희게 된 그 잎이 거울 같은 수면에 비치고 있는 시냇가에

오필리아가 화환을 들고 나타났는데, 미나리아재비, 쐐기풀, 데이지  그리고 목동들이 부르는

상스러운 이름이 아니라 정숙한 여인들이 '사자(死者)의 손가락'이란 이름으로 부르는 자색 꽃으로

만든 그 화환을 늘어진 버드나무 가지에 걸려고 기어 오르다가 심술궂은 나뭇가지가 부러져서 화환과

함께 흐느끼는  시냇물 속으로 떨어지고 말았대. 옷자락이 물 위로 넓게 퍼져 잠시 인어처럼 물 위에

떠 있는 동안 다가올 자신의 불행은 모른채 마치 원래 물 속에서 태어나고 자란것 처럼 옛

찬송가 몇 절을 불렀다는구나. 하지만 가엾게도 얼마되지 않아  물이 배어 무거워진 옷자락과 함께

아름다운 목소리는 물 밑 진흙 속으로 끌려 들어가고 말았단다.     -햄릿 4막 7장중에서-

There is a willow grows aslant a brook,

That shows his hoar leaves in the glassy stream;

There with fantastic garlands did she come

Of crowflowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples,

That liberal shepherds give a grosser name,

But our cold maids do dead men's fingers call them.

There, on the pendant boughs her coronet weeds

Clamb'ring to hang, an envious sliver broke;

When down her weedy trophies and herself

Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide;

And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up;

Which time she chaunted snatches of old tunes;

As one incapable of her own distress,

Or like a creature native and indu'd

Unto that element: but long it could not be

Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,

Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay

To muddy death.
